Boston Bruins

Post by Phil » Jul Sun 24, 2005 9:46 am

I'm psyched for some hockey after a long drought! I've put together the players that I think the Bruins will have on the team going forward:

Goal
Andrew Raycroft
Hannu Toivonen

Forwards
Joe Thornton
Sergei Samsonov
Tom Fitzgerald
Andy Hilbert
Brad Boyes
Patrice Bergeron
Colton Orr
P.J. Axelsson

Defense
Ian Moran
Andrew Alberts
Mark Stuart
Milan Jurcina
Nick Boynton
Zdenek Kutlak

Now it will be interesting who they pickup, as we really need some veterans. This core team is one of the youngest and most talented bunch of players. Tops on my list of players to target is a player that lives here on the South Shore in the offseason:

Brendan Shanahan

I don't like the idea of going for damaged over the hill type players like Jeremy Roenick (1 concussion away from retrement), or John Leclair. I'm undecided on Amonte.

Who would you like to see the Bruins go after as free agents?

Peter Forsberg!

BTW, there was an article in todays patriot ledger saying that ticket prices will indeed be lower next year, which is very good. The owner(jacobs or something like that, i forgot the name) sayed ticket prices will be cut all across the board, and that there would be a select area of $10 tickets. Also there are going to be alot of cheap packages.

Yes,I saw that too Watchu. They orginally said they wouldn't lower prices maybe it was season ticket prices.I don't know but they probably thought better of it.

Didn't they also say that 12 and under get in free until November? Then they said after that time they would offer some family packages?

Bruins extend contract offers
7/26/2005

Boston Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell today made contract offers to several of the team's restricted and unrestricted free agents.

O'Connell offered Joe Thornton a five-year contract. Sergei Gonchar was tendered a four-year deal. Sergei Samsonov, P. J. Axelsson and Martin Lapointe were made three-year contract offers.

"These players have made valuable contributions to our team," said O'Connell. "We hope these offers make clear to them how much we want them to be a part of building a championship team in Boston."

Thornton, Samsonov and Axelsson are restricted free agents. Gonchar and Lapointe are unrestricted free agents. Teams have an exclusive window to negotiate with their own free agents through July 31.

Other upcoming, important dates of note are Sat., July 30 for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, and Mon., Aug. 1, which is the first day of unrestricted free agency. The 2005-06 NHL season opens on Wed., Oct. 5 with all 30 teams in action.

They better not be offering Lapointe much. His last contract was huge and he never lived up to it.

They did say that for children under 12 admission would be free. They want to get the younger generation hooked on hockey. Which is fine with me! I would love it if my boys (too young right now) were to play hockey!

Brad ISbister signed today, not exactly big news but a big body on the wing that can put it in the net occasionally! My favorite free agent right now is:
# There's some talk that Mike Modano might end up parting ways with the Dallas Stars. The club failed to re-sign him before Aug. 1 and he's going to test the UFA market to gauge his value before returning to negotiations with the Stars.

especially if we trade Joey T

Modana is old, though it seems all the big names in the NHL are old.

Modano is old but for a year or possibly two could be a big help!

I'd rather keep Joey T, coming off a World Championship (starring for Canada) and a Swiss Championship (Davos) maybe his good luck will rub-off with the B's!

B's Sign Glen Murray and Shawn Mceachern. Also the rumors heat up...
TSN.ca Staff

For the first time in his career, Mike Modano may be donning a jersey other than that of the Stars.

According to a report on RDS.ca, the Boston Bruins are expected to sign the 35-year-old centre with an announcement coming as early as Tuesday. Modano had three offers to consider with the Bruins being the front-runner. The Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins are the others in the race for his services.

Yeah, under the same category we signed Brian Leetch! And still in the hunt for Team USA (and Dallas) star Mike Modano!
Modano rejects Stars latest offer

Mike Modano

TSN.ca Staff

8/3/2005 3:49:41 PM

Mike Modano's agent says his client has rejected the latest contract offer from the Dallas Stars.

"I informed the Stars of Mike's decision a few minutes ago," Brian Lawton told TSN.

While it is still possible that Modano will return to Dallas, that possibility now seems remote, despite reports Tuesday night that we would be returning to the franchise.

Lawton would not say which teams are still in the running for Modano's services, but NHL sources tell TSN that Boston and Chicago both have four year deals on the table worth in excess of $20 million.

The Stars had offered Modano a five year deal worth $17.5 million.

4 years?!? How old is he, and what do his stats look like over the last few years. I'm assuming they have probaly been on the decline for a few years already!

That makes my Rangers Captains jersey signed by Brian Leetch look so much better. It was a present from Paul Stewart.

I like the Leech signing, he will make up for the loss of Gonchar. I don't like losing him but the Penguins over paid given the cap.

Too bad we lost out on Modano but for a four year deal, Dallas can have him.

A few have been playing in the Top Gun league in Hingham. I believe there is a playoff game there tonight. You could get a good hockey "fix".

Since we got spanked by Montreal last, our captain has gone on to lead a Swiss team to the Championship, and Canada to the world championship.

I hope we can sign him to a long term deal and that this isn't our last year with Joe Thornton!

Here is some GOOD news:

On the same day that Boston Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell welcomed NHL All-Star defenseman Brian Leetch to Boston, he also announced that the Bruins have agreed to terms with veteran center Alexei Zhamnov
For those who aren't familiar with AZ: He was an all-star in 2002 and has won three Olympic medals - one of each kind - for Russia.

Yes, I do love hockey but I was fine with Sox/Pats only for a year. Heck I even went to the SLC Olympics just to see some world class hockey (was front row for the Russia-Czech 1-0 thriller, cheering for Sammy, harrassing Hasek). I'll be at the Garden this autumn cheering on the black and gold brigade!

With the lockout over I have to wonder what shape this league is in. All this past winter no one talked about hockey and this is supposed to be a hot bed. I can imagine what the take has been in places like Atlanta and Dallas where this sport is nothing more than Arena Football on ice. Should be very interesting to see what the turnout is early this season.

The Bruins have made a commitment to bring families back to the game of hockey. In addition to previously announced discounts on season tickets, prices on over half of the individual game ticket categories have been reduced for the 2005-06 season. Children ages 12 and under can attend the ten Bruins games prior to Thanksgiving for free and popular promotional events such as Student Nights, Family Packs and Home for the Holidays, which offer ticket discounts to selected games throughout the season, are returning.
Individual game tics go onsale Sept 10 2005, packages are available now. That is cool that 12 and under get in free to 10 games!

Ben Walter from Umass-Lowell is making a solid showing at camp. He is slated to start at Providence but could crack the lineup at LW...

The Bruins finally got a preseason win last night 6-2 over the Islanders. Ben Walter had a goal and an assist, but I think he may end up in Providence.

How come the pre-season games aren't on tv?

Thats usually hwo it goes vs. Montreal. Dominate the game, their goalie plays unbelievably, they get a bogus late power play and get a late goal to win.

Overall the game wasn't very good. Not much checking, no fighting.

The bottom line is that the Bruins didn't capitalize on the power play opportunities they had. And they didn't kill the penalty at the end of the game when they needed to. The rules have changed and the players need to adjust. No excuses. They lost.

The fans, on the other hand, are real morons. To throw crap on the ice because you weren't happy with a call and lost the game is the pinnacle of ignorance. Embarrasing.
