I'm still recovering from my injuries from jumping of that band wagon last month. Daniel Nava, now that is the rarest of rare things to happen in baseball. 21 perfect games (including the one from Detroit a couple weeks ago), but only the 2nd time this has happened ever. Grand Slam on his first major league pitch. I read about this guys background, can't help but to root for him. I hope he gets to stay up for a while and get some more playing time, this guy is a legit hitter.

Soxs just lost Varitek is going to be out for 6 weeks!Broken foot!Victor has a broken bone in his left thumb is already out. They picked up Kevin Cash from the Astro's trading Angel Sanchez, infielder to the them.

Already out is Pedroia with a broken bone in his left foot out for 6 weeks as well.Delcarmen went on the DL with soreness in his elbow.Mike Lowell with hip problems too.

That makes 10 players now on the disabled list!I don't think I can remember ever having a year like this with that many players injured!!!Strangely enough they are only 1 1/2 games out of first behind the Yankee's!

Now it's 11 on the DL.

I hear Pawtucket is looking for anybody who can throw the ball 90 feet, doesn't matter if you can get it over the plate, they just need some people with arms to trot out there and take a beating LOL

BOSTON (AP)The Boston Red Sox have lost Kevin Youkilis(notes) for the season with a torn muscle in his right thumb.

Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis' season may be over thanks to an injured right thumb.
(Elise Amendola/AP Photo)
Manager Terry Francona said Thursday the first baseman will have season-ending surgery on Friday in Cleveland for the injury sustained Monday night in a 6-5 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Youkilis is expected to be ready well before spring training starts.

The injury is the latest in a long line of them suffered by Boston. Batting fourth in the lineup for most of the season, Youkilis is hitting .307 with 19 homers and 62 RBIs. Francona said that Mike Lowell(notes), who came off the disabled list when Youkilis went on it Tuesday, is expected to play at least four of the next five games at first base.

even though they haven't pitched well, can't blame this "bridge year" on those 2. All the blame has to go to Theo for not doing anything when half the team got injured. This was good for the future, but stuck a fork in them early for this season.

Yet another Theo move???Is he back????

Damon claimed by Boston; must decide
By Jason Beck / MLB.com

08/23/10 4:40 PM ET

DETROIT -- If the Tigers were hoping to push Johnny Damon through waivers for a possible late-August trade, they might be disappointed. The veteran outfielder was claimed on waivers by the Red Sox.

Damon's contract requires his approval for a trade to all but eight clubs. The Red Sox, though, are not one of those clubs. He has until Wednesday to decide whether to accept a move to Boston.

The question then becomes whether Damon would be claimed to set up a possible trade or to block him from being traded to another club. If it's the former, the Tigers would have 48 hours to try to work out a deal with the Red Sox. Otherwise, they would have to either pull him back off waivers or let the claiming team take his contract -- including what's left of his $8 million salary due -- and receive nothing in return.

There was nothing active on the trade front with Damon as of Sunday, but if Damon was placed on waivers Thursday, as previously reported, teams had until Monday to submit a claim on him. Claims placed on players are processed by league -- American League first in this case, then National League -- then by record, in order from worst to first.

The 36-year-old Damon is batting .270 this season with 30 doubles, seven home runs and 40 RBIs. He has struggled in August, batting .219 (16-for-78) with no homers, four doubles, a triple, eight RBIs and 20 strikeouts.

The Tigers signed Damon to a one-year contract in February with the idea that he could be the offensive piece that could help them contend again. For a while, they did, leading the AL Central as recently as last month before a month-long slump out of the All-Star break knocked them double-digit games back of the division lead. Detroit recovered with a three-game series sweep of Cleveland this past weekend, but the club remains in third place, 11 games behind the Minnesota Twins.

Damon said last week that he understands why the Tigers might look to deal him and try to save some money or get a prospect in return. He also said he would like to be back with the Tigers next year, whether or not he's traded in the next week or so.

The Tigers added an outfielder on Monday, recalling prospect Casper Wells from Triple-A Toledo, but that move had nothing to do with Damon's situation. The goal there was to get an extra position player back on the roster after going one player short to have an extra reliever last week. Detroit designated reliever Enrique Gonzalez for assignment to make room on its 25-man roster.

Jason Beck is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

He would be an upgrade over Daniel Nava. No offense to Nava, but he is fine in pawtucket for now with Damon back in Boston. I hope it happens he can hit. What about his arm? That could be a problem but I'd take the bat.

Considering what they have gone through this year with the injuries, they could not have been expected to win the World Series. If that is not in the cards, I could care less about making the playoffs.

Next year a healthy team with added strength will make it.

Tampa will be much weaker, they will lose both Crawford and Pena.

The problem I have with this season is that they lost the starting outfield in April and really didn't do anything at all to upgrade the OF talent. In other words, Theo gave up on the Red Sox by May. Not a good sign. Hopefully they stay healthier next season. V-Mart, Beltre, and Big Papi could all be gone. Who will replace them? If Papi is gone, I'd start by trying to sign Manny for DH. Call me crazy but the man can straight up hit the ball. Who the hell else could they get to replace these 3 bats?

Remember in April, they were all supposed to be returning in June/July so why mortgage the future. It did not work at that way but I see the logic.

Papi will be back, he has a player option for $12 million next year, he is a fool if he does not take it. What will end up happening is they will work out a 2 year deal for around $20 million.

Beltre gone, he will be looking for a 4 year deal around $60 million, not a good investment. I believe they will make a huge push for Adrein Gonzales, that is why they were saving their prospects. Gonzales at first, Youk moves to 3rd.

Martinez is a difficult one. If the kid "Salty"(?) is the future, let Martinez go and bring back Tek to mentor the kid.

Do not be suprised to see Dice K gone and they venture into the free agent pitching market, Cliff Lee?

Phil wrote:I don't think the Sox have it this year. They never replaced Manny (or Jason Bay), and Papi is in decline. Now they have a very weak batting order. I predict a 3rd place finish, probably around 87 wins.
May come close in my 87 wins prediction from early May. Might get it exact since it seems like they have officially threw in the towel. Beltre has left the team to be with his pregnant wife and they canceled Bucholtz start on Sunday, going with Wake instead.

I can only laugh at the suckers who showed up at Fenway last night. They didn't call the game until @ 10:30pm what a waste of time and money.

John Tomase from the Herald is a complete moron.

His headline this morning.

"David Ortiz gets the short end

Sox balk at longer deal"

The "short end" was a $12.5 million one year contract, (club option).

To insult regular working people by phrasing that as "the short end"{ is typical of this idiot.

This is getting to be like some soap opera!

Report: Red Sox get Gonzalez
Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff December 5, 2010 07:50 PM

After a day of many twists and turns, it appears the Red Sox have landed Adrian Gonzalez.

Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting the deal was done. More information as we get it.

UPDATE, 8:05 p.m.: It appears the deal was done without an extension. Look for the Red Sox to come to an agreement, but not announce it until after Opening Day. That would allow them to save millions on the luxury tax.

It is likely that the Red Sox and Gonzalez have an understanding of what the extension would be, otherwise it would be risky to trade three prospects for one year out of the first baseman. This is basically what happened with Josh Beckett last spring. There was a deal in place that was announced after Opening Day.

It also would allow them to make sure Gonzalez recovers from the surgery he had on his right (non-throwing) shoulder. But that is not a major issue.

I think it's more like keeping up with the Skankees, Millar might be getting carried away here. BUT WHAT A GREAT TRADE! THEO JUST WENT UP A NOTCH IN MY BOOK!!!
from boston dot com:
Late last night, the Red Sox announced a news conference for today at 11 a.m. to make a major baseball announcement.

According to SI.coms Jon Heyman, the sides have agreed to the framework of an extension, reportedly for eight years and $167 million.
This makes them the favorite, said Kevin Millar, the former Red Sox who is working for MLB TV at this weeks Winter Meetings. Hes an unbelievable hitter and hes going to make a big difference. This gives [Kevin Youkilis] a chance to go back to his natural position [third base]. They are stacked right now. I cant see how they can be beaten.
